Hiker Killed In Fall Near Breakneck Ridge

He and his companions were climbing in a quarry without any equipment.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — A hiker from Poughkeepsie was killed Thursday when he fell about 100 feet while climbing near Breakneck Ridge. Kenneth Steier, 25, of Poughkeepsie, was hiking with friends on the Washburn Trail near Bull Hill in Philipstown, Putnam County.

They were off trail, climbing a quarry with no equipment, when Steier fell to the rocky ground around 6 p.m., the Poughkeepsie Journal said.

The trail is part of the Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve.
