Interior Secretary Haaland To Give Bard's Commencement Address

She made history when she became the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary.

ANNANDALE, NY — Bard College announced United States Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland will be delivering the commencement address at its ceremony in May.

She will also be awarded an honorary degree, according to a news release.

The 162nd commencement will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 28 in the tent on the Seth Goldfine Memorial Rugby Field.

There will be 425 undergraduate degrees bestowed on the Class of 2022 along with 161 graduate degrees, including master of fine arts, doctor and master of philosophy and master of music in vocal arts and in conducting.

Haaland made history becoming the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary. She is a member of the Pueblo of Laguna and a 35th-generation New Mexican.

She was the first Native American woman elected to lead a state party and was one of the first to serve in Congress.
