Kingston Sears To Close By Spring

The retailer announced another round of Sears and Kmart store closings, including the one in Kingston.

KINGSTON, NY — Sears Holding Corp. will close more than 100 stores, including the Sears store at the Hudson Valley Mall in Kingston, the company announced Thursday. Employees at affected stores were notified Thursday about the closings, which include 39 Sears outlets and 64 Kmart stores, the financially struggling retailer said in a statement.

That leaves Target as the only anchor store at the mall in Ulster County, though there are a Dick's Sporting Goods and a Best Buy, the Daily Freeman said.

This newest round of closings will begin as early as March and extend into April, Sears said. Liquidation sales for some of the soon-to-be-shuttered stores will begin as early as Jan. 12, the company added.

The closings are part of Sears' continuing "strategic assessment" as the company tries to eliminate unprofitable locations. Throughout 2017, the retailer shut down underperforming Sears and Kmart stores as the company say drops in store sales and overall revenue.
