Police had been called to remove him from a gas station store in Newburgh.

NEWBURGH, NY — A man who police said stole a candy bar from a gas station on Broadway in the City of Newburgh was run over and killed by a tractor-trailer Wednesday. Kyrell Saunders, 28, was asked by the gas station's clerk to be removed from the store.

He left at the request of police officers and when out on Route 9W put his hands out as if to slow a northbound 18-wheeler, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

Saunders, who has no known address, crossed in front of the moving tractor trailer and tried to jump onto the side of it, but fell under the trailer portion.
