4-Car Crash After Police Chase In Orange County: UPDATE

Police said the incident began as a police pursuit on the Thruway.

NEWBURGH, NY — A crash involving four cars Thursday in Newburgh began as a police chase on I-87. State police said troopers attempted shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday to stop a black Chevy Tahoe on the Thruway near the Newburgh exit.

The pursuit was based on an alert for a vehicle wanted for questioning regarding an investigation.

The driver of the Tahoe did not stop as requested and the pursuit began, police said.

Troopers said the driver left the interstate at Exit 17 and continued until, about 10 minutes later, it collided head on with another Chevy Tahoe and two other passenger vehicles on State Route 17K in the Town of Newburgh.

Four people in the suspect vehicle were injured, one of whom was taken for non-life-threatening injuries to St. Luke's Hospital. Two others were taken to Westchester Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, and the fourth person was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with serious injuries.

The people in the other vehicles sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Troop F BCI and Collision Reconstruction Unit are assisting with the investigation.
