Newburgh Man Shoots Woman In Face Sunday

The gun was owned legally, police said.

MARLBORO, NY — A Newburgh man was arrested after shooting a woman in the face Sunday.

State Police said Darren J. Olympia, 21, of Newburgh, was charged with second-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment, felonies.

Police were called to a private home in the Town of Marlboro where they found a 21-year-old woman with a single gunshot wound to her face.

She was taken to Westchester Medical Center where she is in critical condition.

An investigation found that Olympia had retrieved a legally owned handgun and recklessly shot one round from it, inadvertently striking the woman.

He was arraigned in the Town of Marlborough Justice Court and sent to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail or $50,000 bond.
