Nuvance Health has received its initial accreditation for a Headache Medicine Fellowship Program from the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS). The health system is recruiting qualified and motivated fellows for the 2022 and 2023 academic years.

Fellows can contribute to improving access to headache medicine. Up to 75% of 18 to 65 year olds worldwide have had a headache in the last year, and of them, 30% or more have reported migraine. Yet there is a shortage of board-certified headache specialists. There are fewer than 2,000 UCNS-certified physicians but more than 39 million people living with migraine in the United States.

Fellows will focus on the diagnosis and management of headache disorders, migraine and facial pain. Fellowship-trained headache faculty and neurology attending physicians will train fellows. Community outreach to support people with headache disorders, and clinical research and publication will be encouraged and supported throughout the program.

“Nuvance Health received UCNS accreditation because of the breadth and depth of headache care we provide. Our headache fellows will learn from board-certified headache specialists, see a variety of headache patients, participate in clinical trials and make a significant impact in the community through awareness and education,” said Dr. Hida Nierenburg, director of headache medicine and the Headache Medicine Fellowship Program at Nuvance Health.

“We are extremely proud to receive UCNS accreditation and launch the Headache Medicine Fellowship Program at Nuvance Health. The accreditation is another example of our commitment to providing the latest headache and migraine care, and advancing prevention, diagnostic and treatment options through clinical trials and research,” said Dr. Paul Wright, senior vice president and system chair of the Neuroscience Institute at Nuvance Health.

“Dr. Nierenburg has been mentoring neurologists through our neurology residency program and will now be an effective and excellent fellowship director,” said Dr. Wright.

Board eligible family medicine, internal medicine, neurology and psychiatry physicians who graduated from Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) programs are encouraged to apply for the Headache Medicine Fellowship Program.
