Nuvance Health uses new technology for breast cancer surgery
An advanced way to locate breast cancer for lumpectomy is now available at Nuvance Health hospitals in New York and Connecticut

Nuvance Health now offers Magseed® to locate a cancerous tumor in the breast for lumpectomy. Breast radiologists and surgeons are using the technology at Northern Dutchess Hospital, Putnam Hospital and Vassar Brothers Medical Center in New York, and Danbury Hospital and Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut.
The benefits of Magseed® include:
- Flexibility: A radiologist can place the seed any time before surgery, including the day of surgery, which is convenient for patients.
- Less intrusive and no radiation: Magseed® requires no wire or radiation. A wire that sticks out of the breast or radioactive seed have traditionally been used to mark a breast cancer.
- Accuracy: The seed precisely marks the site of a cancer in the breast, resulting in less invasive breast surgery and the surgeon being able to preserve more healthy tissue.
A radiologist uses mammography or ultrasound to place Magseed® into the center of the tumor in the breast. The tiny, metal seed is 1mm by 5mm, which is smaller than a grain of rice.
