Prior to his arrest in Rockland County in January, Murphy had been the subject of a 14-month multi-state manhunt.

Hoovler said his office will recommend Murphy be sentenced to 23 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced Dec. 20.

He said he hopes the guilty plea brings Napoleoni's family and loved ones some degree of closure.

"There is no more serious crime than one involving the taking of an innocent human life," Hoovler said. "Those tempted to engage in violence in Orange County must understand that if they commit a serious offense, they will not be able to escape just punishment."
