Parking-Lot Hit-And-Run Kills Pedestrian in Philmont

The driver fled after backing into the woman, according to New York State Police, who are asking for witnesses to come forward.

PHILMONT, NY — Police say a drunk 24-year-old backed into a woman in the parking lot of the Family Dollar store in Philmont on Monday and then drove away as the pedestrian lay dying. The village resident now faces felony charges.

The victim was transported to Albany Medical Center by Greenport Rescue Squad where she succumbed to her injuries, state police said.

The operator of the vehicle that fled the scene was located and identified as Jennifer McGrath-Jennings.

The state police investigation in partnership with Columbia County District Attorney Paul Czajka's Office resulted in the arrest of McGrath-Jennings for Vehicular Manslaughter 2nd and Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Accident, both Class D Felonies; DWI and Reckless Driving, both Unclassified Misdemeanors; and Unsafe backing.

Arraignment is scheduled in the Town of Claverack Court.

State Police Livingston BCI is continuing the investigation. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information regarding it is requested to contact the BCI at 518-851-2982.
