Police Find Body Of Woman Missing In Orange County

Police agencies had spent hundreds of hours searching for the 21-year-old.

ORANGE COUNTY, NY — A body found in some woods in Walkill has been identified as a 21-year-old whose mom reported her missing July 5, according to police.

Brittany Hendershot had last been seen by her mother on June 23, in Middletown.

On Monday, a team consisting of members from the Port Jervis City Police Department, New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the Ramapo Search and Rescue Squad searched a wooded area in the town of Wallkill and located human remains.

An autopsy was performed by the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office and the deceased has been positively identified as Brittany Hendershot, police said.

Over the past seven weeks, the Port Jervis City Police Department, New York State Police, other law enforcement agencies and community partners spent several hundred hours of combined investigative work, police said.

"On behalf of the members of the Port Jervis City Police Department, we extend our sincere sympathy to the family of Brittany Hendershot and ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," Port Jervis police said on Facebook.

New York State Police said their Bureau of Criminal Investigation is still on the case.
