Police Identify Bus Monitor Killed In Crash With Patrol Car

The state police said the school bus failed to stop at a stop sign.

LAGRANGE, NY — The New York State Police continue investigating the fatal crash of an Arlington district school bus and a police patrol vehicle as they released the name of the woman who died.

Robin P. Alvarez, 59, of East Fishkill, was killed Tuesday in the collision. She was a bus monitor for the Arlington Central School District.

The initial investigation found that the state police patrol car, which was operated by Trooper Christopher Batista, was traveling east on Route 55, police said, adding he was not operating under an emergency.

Arlington's bus was going north on South Cross Road and failed to stop at the stop sign while attempting to get onto Route 55.

Batista's patrol car and the bus collided causing the bus to strike a utility pole.

Alvarez was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said it was determined she was not wearing a seat belt.

The investigation by the state police remains ongoing.

New York Attorney General Letitia James's office has not opened an investigation into the incident but is aware of it and is reviewing it.

Two adult students were on the bus at the time of the crash. They were taken to local hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, as were the bus driver and Batista.
