Rangers Rescue Hiker With Machete Injury

The forest rangers said the man had lost a significant amount of blood.

PLEASANT VALLEY, NY — A Dutchess County man with a severe injury had to be rescued recently while hiking in the Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Area.

The Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers said, around 7:30 a.m. Nov. 10, a call was received from Dutchess County 911 regarding an injured hiker in his 50s in the state forest.

Rangers who responded determined the Hyde Park resident had stepped on a machete while getting out of his hammock the night before.

As a result, the man lost a significant amount of blood.

Responders took the man out of the woods via a utility terrain vehicle to a Mobile Life Support ambulance within three hours.

In addition to the DEC's forest rangers, responders included Pleasant Valley Fire and EMS, Union Vale Fire and EMS and the New York State Police.

The 917-acre Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Area is one of the largest state forests in Dutchess County. It is in the towns of Pleasant Valley and LaGrange.
