Scooter Driver Dies When Rear-Ended While Stopped For School Bus

SPARROW BUSH, NY — The driver of a motor scooter was killed in an early morning collision in the Orange County hamlet of Sparrow Bush Tuesday.

The New York State Police said, shortly after 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, troopers responded to 1296 Route 42 in Sparrow Bush for a motor scooter/vehicle crash.

The initial investigation found a school bus, that was not involved in the accident, was in the northbound lane of Route 42 with its emergency lights activated.

Dennis A. Bickham, 59, of Monticello, was traveling south on his 2013 Honda PCX-125 when he stopped for the school bus.

While stopped, he was struck from behind by a 2011 Dodge Avenger driven by Denise L. Donovan, 63, of Forestburgh.

Bickham was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Donovan was not injured.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
