Service, Reception for John Dewey Shaw
A retired corrections officer, Mr. Shaw was a Beacon resident.

Mr. John Dewey Shaw, a resident of Beacon, New York for 27 years, passed away at the age of 74 on April 29, 2017 at New York Presbyterian/ Hudson Valley Hospital. John was born on May 25, 1942 in Red Springs, North Carolina to Meta Shaw-Minter and John A. McNeill and was later raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
In 1960, John joined the military. While serving in the military, John was a paratrooper and a member of the National Guard receiving honorable discharge in 1964. John then moved to Brooklyn, New York holding several positions before going into Narcotics/ Corrections. While still working as a correctional officer in Brooklyn, John was transferred to Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, New York.
Because of John’s hard work and dedication, he was appointed Head of the Honor Guard and C.E.R.T. Team Sergeant and later retired in 1997.

In 1983, John met the love of his life, Catherine Carr and dated until they were married in 1989. John received and loved Catherine’s oldest son, Troy Lowe as one of his own and together they had one son, Spencer Shaw. John loved both of his sons and was a great provider and role model to both of them.
In addition to his wife and two sons of Beacon, New York, John leaves behind his son, Vincent McNeill of Jacksonville, Florida, and his daughter Michelle Oliver of Laurenburgh, North Carolina. John also leaves behind three sisters, Lynnise Johnson, Vivian McNeill and Luella McNeill, one brother, John McNeill, 3 special god daughters, Candace Brown, Domonique Whisnant, and Stephanie Cradle, 3 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his mother, father, and several siblings.

A Memorial Service will be held May 12, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Star Bethlehem Baptist Church. 304 Spring Street, Ossining, New York followed by Honor Guard Service and reception. Arrangement handled by the Dorsey Funeral Home, Inc.
