NEW WINDSOR, NY — The search for a missing senior has come to an unhappy ending.

On March 6, with help from New York State Forest Rangers, officers found the remains of Jose Santacruz in the woods near his home, according to the New Windsor Police Department.

The 60-year-old had been reported missing around 1 p.m. on January 21 after leaving his Oakwood Terrace home to go for a walk. He reportedly left all of his personal effects behind, including his cellphone, wallet, and keys.

Police say that while there are no signs of foul play at this time, Santacruz's death remains under investigation. An autopsy was conducted on March 9 and the results are pending.

The New Windsor Police Department asked for public's help in finding Santacruz, asking neighbors to review any security video footage they might have. Police reviewed hours of video, searched several locations on foot, and used drones, UTVs and dogs to assist in the search. Severe weather conditions, however, made searching difficult.
