Trio Faces Drug Charges After Traffic Stop

Troopers found probable cause to search the vehicle and its occupants.

NEW PALTZ, NY — Three people were arrested after a traffic stop on I-87 in the Town of New Paltz. State police said troopers stopped a vehicle around 4:10 a.m. Nov. 11 driven by Daequan I. Roberts, 23, of New York City, for a traffic violation.

During an interview, troopers found probable cause to search the vehicle and its occupants.

Robert and his passengers Mauvonte I. Roberts, 23, of Middle River, Maryland, and an 18-year-old whose name was not released, were found to be in possession of about 4.6 grams of crack cocaine, multiple glassine envelopes containing about 1.3 grams of heroin, 5.8 grams of K2, 1 gram of marijuana.

All three were taken into custody and processed at the Newburgh barracks.

They were charged with the following:

  • Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, a felony
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony
  • Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor
  • Unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation
  • Vehicle and traffic violations (Daequan I. Roberts only)

They were arraigned in the Town of Esopus Court and sent to the Ulster County Jail.

Daequan Roberts was held without bail. Mauvonte was held in lieu of $1,500 bail or $2,500 bond. The 18-year-old was held in lieu of $1,000 bail or $2,000 bond.
