Victims Of Deadly 2-Car, Head-On Hudson Valley Crash ID'd By Police As Teen, Senior Citizen

OLIVE, NY — A tragedy on a Hudson Valley highway has left two families devastated.

On Sunday, at 6:47 a.m., troopers out of the State Police Kingston barracks responded to a two-car motor vehicle collision on Route 28, in the town of Olive.

Investigators say a 2024 Chevrolet traveling west on State Route 28, for unknown reasons, crossed into the eastbound lane of travel and struck a 2021 Mercedes-Benz, driven by 72-year-old Philip F. Jacobus, of New York City, head on.

Following the collision, the driver and only occupant of the 2024 Chevrolet, identified as 19-year-old Peter B. Bonenfant, 19, of Smithtown, was extricated from the vehicle. Bonenfant received lifesaving measures at the scene and was rushed to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston, where he died.

Jacobus, meanwhile, was extricated from the Mercedes-Benz and received lifesaving measures at the scene. He was initially taken to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston and was later transferred to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital where he died.

The investigation remains ongoing, according to NYSP.

State police were assisted by the Ulster County Sheriff's Office, Olive First Aid Ambulance and the Olive Fire Department.
