Woman Killed In Hiking Accident At Mohonk Preserve

Police said the woman fell about 50 feet down a narrow crevice.

MARBLETOWN, NY — A Dutchess County woman was killed in a hiking accident Saturday. The Ulster County Sheriff's Office said they were called to the Table Rocks trail head in the Mohonk Preserve around 10:50 a.m., along with multiple rescue squads and the New York State Forest Rangers.

They found a woman, later identified as Margaret A. Fitzgerald, 71, of Wappingers Falls, who had been hiking with a group about a mile and a half from the trailhead.

She had slipped on an icy slope and fell about 50 feet down a narrow crevice, police said.

The forest rangers rappelled down to reach her, but she died of her injuries.

Assistance was also provided by the Marbletown Fire Department, High Falls Rescue Squad, Mobile Life Support Services and Mohonk Preserve staff.
