NEW YORK CITY — The Garment District Alliance has unveiled "Clouds", a new public art installation featuring six cloud sculptures reaching up to 33 feet tall.
The installation, by Swiss artist Olaf Breuning, transforms the Broadway plazas between 39th and 40th Streets.
According to Breuning, the sculptures reinterpret the qualities of clouds—including lightness, movement and impermanence through steel and aluminum.
The free installation invites pedestrians to look above the busy streets and architecture of Midtown and toward the sky.
The sculptures will remain on public view through March 2027.
"Clouds" is part of the Garment District Alliance's Garment District Art on the Plazas, a year-round public art program made possible through NYC DOT Art Partners, an initiative of the New York City Department of Transportation's NYC DOT Art program.
The Garment District Alliance works with NYC DOT to coordinate and install public art exhibits on neighborhood plazas, helping enhance these spaces and make them more welcoming to pedestrians and visitors.
Originally conceived in 2013 after the Public Art Fund invited Breuning to develop an outdoor sculpture for Central Park, "Clouds" was inspired by his 2008 photograph of the same name.
