Elderly Midtown Man Struck, Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver
An 84-year-old man was fatally struck by an SUV driver while crossing a Midtown street just steps away from his home, police said.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — An elderly man was fatally struck by an SUV driver while crossing a Midtown street last month, police said Wednesday.
Shortly after 5 p.m. on Jan. 29, the victim, 84-year-old James J. Shields, was crossing First Avenue at East 58th Street when a 2016 blue Honda SUV, heading north along First Avenue, struck him in the crosswalk, police said.
Shields, who lived just steps away from the intersection was found unresponsive with severe trauma to the body. He was pronounced dead at Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The driver did not stay at the scene, police said. The crash is being investigated by the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad.
