Frank Harrison, President of Health-E-Media, On Cleaning

Frank Harrison explains the importance of cleaning up your environment to avoid depression.

If the short days and cold, cold nights have got you feeling down, then you’re probably looking for a way to avoid depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Well, I know that depression can be exacerbated by having a messy or cluttered work space or living environment. It might be the dead of Winter right now, but that’s no reason to wait for Spring to begin cleaning. Here are a few ways to help declutter and organize your environment a bit more.

Tackle Objectives in Parts
When most people look at their messy office or home, they feel that they must clean everything at once, but this is just not possible. It will take a bit of time and planning to truly get clean. That’s why you’ll want to break down your objectives into smaller parts. Don’t just make one single goal of cleaning up. Instead, write down a checklist of the smaller pieces that will add up to a clean environment. Wipe down your desk, go through your papers and files, sanitize your computer monitor, sweep the floor. These are smaller tasks that are easier to complete and, before you know it, they will add up to a clean space.

Don’t Hoard
If you become a hoarder, then you’re going to drown yourself in useless items. This will only lead to a never-ending cycle of clutter. You will never truly clean your house or office if you don’t get rid of items that you don’t use. The giant box that your TV shipped with is not going to serve you any purpose; get rid of it. Those clothes from 12 years ago probably don’t fit/aren’t trendy anymore. Donate them to a thrift store. Hoarding itself is a disorder that can be treated.
