Giant Dog Sculptures Greet Passersby In Garment District
Aiming to welcome New Yorkers back to Midtown, the six giant dogs will sit along Broadway through November.
MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Aiming to welcome New Yorkers back to the city's business district, a set of "gigantic, playful" dog sculptures have been installed on Broadway in the Garment District.
The installation, "Doggy Bags," was created by the artist Will Kurtz, consisting of six different dog breeds: pug, basset hound, chihuahua, English Bulldog, bull mastiff and vizsla. They are made out of recycled materials and held together by steel armature, recycled plastic bags and duct tape.
Each one represents the "unique characteristics and personality of a different breed of dog," while the materials function as a commentary about waste and the importance of recycling, the Garment District Alliance said in a news release.

The sculptures will sit along Broadway between 38th and 40th streets through Nov. 20, part of a year-round public art program in the neighborhood.

“We know these beautiful sculptures – made with all recycled materials - will bring positivity, comfort and joy among visitors, and we encourage all to stop by and enjoy the exhibition this fall," Garment District Alliance president Barbara A. Blair said in the news release.

"Doggy Bags" isn't the first oversized animal installation to pop up in Midtown this summer: over on the West Side, "King Nyani," a giant gorilla sculpture, was installed in Hudson Yards last month and will remain on display for nine months.
