HELL’S KITCHEN, NY — New York State will provide $2 million to help restore the Irish Arts Center’s century-old original home and connect it to the center’s newer flagship building, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Monday.

The project will create a unified, accessible campus at 726 11th Ave. at West 51st Street with more space for performances, classes, film screenings and community events. It will also add office, production and storage space, Hochul said.

“This funding will allow this important cultural institution in Manhattan to continue showcasing the deep cultural and artistic contributions of the Irish to the people of New York,” Hochul said.

The 51st Street redevelopment will complete a two-building campus, adding a 75-seat flexible venue for one-night performances, emerging and established artists and smaller community events.

"The Irish Arts Center is a treasured cultural institution and an important part of the fabric of Hell’s Kitchen. For decades, it has brought people together through music, literature, theater, and the celebration of Irish culture and heritage, while creating a welcoming space for artists and audiences from all backgrounds," State Senator Erik Bottcher said. "This $2 million investment will help the Center build on its success, expand access to arts and cultural programming, and ensure that this historic institution continues to thrive for generations to come."

The building will also provide office and storage space for staff and visiting companies.

Founded in 1972, the Irish Arts Center is known for presenting theater, music, dance, literature, and other events celebrating Irish and Irish American culture.

Construction on the new site is expected to start in early 2027 and finish in late 2028, the center's directors previously told Patch.
