Irish Pub Langan’s To Close After 25 Years, Report Says

The Times Square pub's landlord wanted to raise its rent by nearly $40,000 per month.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — A Times Square pub that has entertained the Broadway crowd for more than two decades is shutting down this month after failed lease negotiations, the New York Post first reported.

Broadway Langan's — located on 47th street between Sixth and Seventh avenues — will shut its doors on Jan. 18, the Post reported. Its landlord wanted to up the pub's monthly rent from $16,000 to $53,000, owner Des O’Brien told the Post.

O’Brien and his business partners had been trying to negotiate a lease extension with landlord A&R Kalimian since 2015, he told the Post.

The bar had catered to the Broadway show crowd due to its close proximity to Times Square, but was welcoming to all. Over the years Langan's had been visited by celebrities such as Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin, politicians such as Sen. John McCain and was a favorite hangout spot for New York Post reporters after the paper moved to the block, the Post reported.

O’Brien will continue to run his three Pig ‘N’ Whistle pubs in Midtown and several other bars throghout the city after Langan's closes, the Post reported.
