Manhattan Events Happening This Weekend

Get drunk with Santa, learn the subway's secret history and ride holiday-themed vintage trains this weekend.

MANHATTAN, NY — This weekend may bring the first snow of the year, but don't let that stop you from getting out and seeing what the city has to offer.

Here are some events going down this weekend in Manhattan that Patch recommends checking out.

Wreath Interpretations at Central Park

What: The New York City Parks Department is putting on its annual "Wreath Interpretations" exhibit at the Arsenal Gallery in Central Park starting Thursday, Dec. 7. The exhibit showcases artists' unique interpretations of the classic holiday wreath.

NYC Holiday Benefit for Toys for Tots

Neighborhood: Lower East Side

What: The Rockwood Music Hall in the Lower East Side is holding a benefit concert Friday for Toys for Tots. Bring a toy donation and listen to some great local artists perform. Tickets are free, but reservations must be made in advance.

Where: 196 Allen St

When: 3-5 p.m. Saturday


Santacon

Neighborhood: Midtown

What: It's that time of year again. Thousands of Santa Clause impersonators will descend on New York City for SatnaCon. Organizers exclusively told Patch that the planned meet-up spot for the holiday-themed bar crawl will be the James A. Farley Post Office Building in Midtown.

Where: To be announced

When: Saturday from 10 a.m. until the Santas pass out


Underground Subway Tour

Neighborhood: Financial District

What: New York Adventure Club is hosting a tour of some of Manhattan's subway stations. Transit experts will teach the "secret history of the subway system" while exploring stations from the Financial District up to Grand Central Terminal in Midtown. Tickets are $29 to $35.

When: 2-4:30 p.m. Saturday


Adopt a Dog

Neighborhood: Sutton Place

What: Animal Care Centers of NYC is holding a dog adoption event at Sutton Place's Biscuits & Bath. Any time is a great time to adopt a dog, but right now ACC will throw in a complimentary Biscuits and Bath adoption package valued at $1,300.

Where: Biscuits & Bath 1064 1st Avenue

When: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday


Louis Vuitton Exhibit

Neighborhood: Financial District

What: Check out “Volez, Voguez, Voyagez," a free exhibit about everything Louis Vuitton at the American Stock Exchange Building. The story traces the history of the iconic fashion brand since its creation in 1854 and offers a look at the future of the brand. Tickets must be reserved online.

Where: American Stock Exchange Building at 86 Trinity Place

When: Any day through Jan. 7, 2018


Ride on the Holiday Train

Neighborhood: Upper East Side

What: The MTA is running vintage holiday-themed subway cars down the new Second Avenue subway line every Sunday until Christmas. The refurbished R1-9 cars feature orange rattan seats, ceiling fans, incandescent bulb lighting, drop-sash style windows, vintage roll signs and original advertisements, the MTA said.

Where: East 96th Street and Second Avenue subway station

When: Every Sunday until Christmas. Pick up times are 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.


The Grand Bazaar

Neighborhood: Upper West Side

What: Get some holiday shopping done this weekend at the Upper West Side's Grand Bazaar. The 43,000-square-foot market donates proceeds to four local public schools.

Where: 100 W. 77th St. at Columbus Avenue

When: 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sunday


Tour United Palace

Neighborhood: Washington Heights

What: Head up to Washington Heights this weekend to tour one of the finest theaters in all of New York City. The newly-landmarked United Palace is a favorite of "Hamilton" creator and Washington Heights native Lin Manuel Miranda.

Where: 4140 Broadway at West 175th St.

When: 10-11 a.m.
