Midtown City Council Election Results: Powers, Johnson Win

Midtown residents took to the polls Tuesday to vote Democrats into the City Council.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN-HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — Two Democrats will represent Midtown Manhattan and Hell's Kitchen in the New York City Council for the next four years.

Corey Johnson and Keith Powers won elections for the third and fourth districts in the city's legislative body. The New York Times called both elections for the Democrats a little more than an hour after polls closed Tuesday night.

Powers, who will represent most of central and east Midtown, defeated Republican Rebecca Harary, the Times reported. Powers, a longtime political aide, will take over the seat vacated by the term-limited Daniel Garodnick. The City Council newcomer captured about 57 percent of the vote compared to Harary's 30 percent. Liberal Party candidate Rachel Honig won 12 percent of the vote, according to the city board of elections.
