New Penn Station Concourse Floor Cracks During Cold Snap: Reports

Workers were seen filling up the fissures in the western concourse this week.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Penn Station's new western concourse located underneath the James A. Farley Post Office Building on Eighth Avenue has only been open for about half a year, but it's already starting to break.

Six cracks in the western concourse floor panels were patched up by workers this week, the New York Post first reported. Some of the fissures were about a quarter-inch wide and nearly 20-feet-long, the Post reported.

The floor panels cracked due to the extremely cold temperatures in New York City last week, a spokeswoman for the Empire State Development Corporation told the Post.

"The cracks that appeared in the flooring due to extreme weather have no impact on concourse operations," the spokeswoman told the Post.

The new western concourse for Penn Station opened to the public in June, featuring crisp architecture, modern design and mellow, blue-hued lighting. The new concourse is part of the first phase in the Moynihan Train Hall expansion, which will convert the lower levels of the Farley Post Office Building on Eighth Avenue into a mixed-use development featuring a brand-new transit facility.

The finished station, which will feature new concourses, tracks, restaurants and retail space, is expected to open in 2020.
