Smoke Reported In Rockefeller Center Subway Station, MTA Says

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — The MTA is conducted electrical repairs at the 47-50th Street Rockefeller Center subway station after heavy smoke was reported in the station, an MTA spokesman said. Train service along the line that stop at the station was crippled for much of the day Tuesday as crews worked to fix the problem.

The smoke was caused by "some sort of an electrical issue" and there was no threat of fire in the station, an FDNY spokesman said. The FDNY has concluded its investigation at the station and turned the situation back over to the MTA, an FDNY spokesman said.

For much of the day, trains bypassed Rockefeller Center as the MTA conducted repairs at the station. D, F and M trains did not stop at the station as the FDNY operated at the station and delays hampered the A, C, D, F and M trains into the night, the MTA announced.

Subway passengers reported seeing NYPD officers clearing people from the station. One passenger, a CNN reporter, said he had trouble breathing while passing through the station.

"What is going on at the Rockefeller Center subway station? Just got off to transfer there, station so full of smoke (I think) I could barely breathe," reporter Christopher Massie tweeted.
