These Fine People Died For You.
Please read this alert regarding The Fort Greene Monument in Brooklyn: Your cooperation is requested in the matter of requesting that The National Park Service designate The Fort Greene Monument as a National Memorial. The NPS is reviewing information regarding the making of this designation right now! They are seeking letters of support for the act of providing federal protection to this importsnt histoic site in Brooklyn, NY. For those who are not familar with the site: It is in the vicinity of The Brooklyn Navy Yard and Pratt Institute. The remains of approximately 11,500 American Revolutionary Patriots - who died of disease and starvation on British Prison Ships anchored in the East River during the American Revolution - are interred within the crypt beneath the monument. Their spirts are undoubtedly unsettled. The monument that memorializes their existence and patriotic sacrifice needs recognition and protection, it suffers from vandalism. Federal designation as an element of The National Parks Service will provide 24 hour presence and protection of the site. Please send supportive comments to National Parks Representative Amanda Jones as soon as possible. E-mail your remarks to amanda.jones@nps.gov as soon as possible.
Below is a sample letter drafted by a supporter. This sample was written by Ann Cook - Regent of The Fort Greene Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution.

Dear Amanda Jones of the National Park Service,
I support the Prison Ship Marty'rs Monument to be part of the National Parks System. I want this site as a unit of the Nat'l Park Service where it will be protected and maintained. This site is on a battlefield as well. General Washington escaped over this hill during the Battle of Brooklyn aka. the Battle of Long Island. It is NOT just commemorative only-men died there.
Ft Greene was originally called Fort Putnam. There are still thousands of bones of dead patriots in the mud in NY harbor. There were at least 16 prison ships docked there. Below this monument lay over 11,500 American POW's making it the single largest crypt of American Revolutionary War dead in the nation. This needs to be safeguarded with a 24 hr guard like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, properly maintained and recognized as a National Shrine.
