Water Main Break Damages Roads Near Empire State Building: FDNY

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — A water main broke Tuesday morning below the street of the Empire State building, damaging the roadway and sidewalk, an FDNY spokesman said.

Fire department crews, Con Edison and the city Department of Buildings were on the scene of the water main break at Fifth Avenue and West 33rd Street Tuesday morning attempting to "alleviate the water condition," an FDNY spokesman said.

The Empire State Building experience "minor water intrusion" during the water main break, but operations were not affected, building managers announced on social media.

While responders operated on the scene streets near the Empire State Building were shut down to traffic and pedestrians. West and East 33rd Street were shut down between Madison and Sixth avenues, officials said.

The fire department responded to the break around 8:30 a.m., an FDNY spokesman said. The spokesman could not provide detail on the damages to the road and sidewalk.

Nobody was injured during the water main break, an FDNY spokesman said.
