HAUPPAUGE, NY — The Suffolk County Department of Health Services has closed the second beach in the Town of Brookhaven this week, advising of unsafe bacteria levels, as temperatures climb.

Tides Beach in Rocky Point is closed to bathing due to findings of bacterial levels exceeding acceptable criteria, the agency said Thursday.

Ronkonkoma Beach on Rosevale Avenue in Ronkonkoma, also remains closed since earlier this week.

The beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

Bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott said.

For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach hotline at 631-852-5822, or contact the Office of Ecology at 631-852-5760 during business hours.
