ROCKY POINT, NY — Four Rocky Point beaches will remain closed to bathing due to the findings of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services said Wednesday night.
Nine other beaches throughout the county remain closed.
The beaches include Friendship, Sound, Tides, and Terraces on the Sound.
The beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria has subsided to acceptable levels.
Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott says bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach hotline at 631-852-5822, or contact the Office of Ecology at 631-852-5760 during business hours.
