SOUND BEACH, NY — The New York Blood Center will host a blood drive at St. Louis De Montfort R.C. Church in Sound Beach on Saturday in memory of a community member who understood the life-changing impact of blood donations.
It will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Al Nielson was a kind and selfless man who relied on blood transfusions for strength and resilience during his battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, officials said.
His family began hosting an annual blood drive in honor of his birthday following his passing in 2008, as a way to give back to those who donated blood during his time of need, according to officials.
Saturday's blood drive will be the 18th annual blood drive held in memory of Nielson to celebrate his bravery and help ensure that hospital patients have access to lifesaving blood donations.
One blood donation has the power to help save up to three lives.
NYBC is urging eligible donors of all blood types to give blood, with an especially critical need for Type O donors and younger donors to help strengthen the blood supply for the next generation.
As the winter months approach, businesses, schools, community groups and other organizations are also encouraged to host blood drives to help ensure blood is available for patients throughout the holiday season and into the new year.
In light of recent updates to FDA guidance, more people than ever may now be eligible to give. Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. To view current eligibility guidelines or make an appointment, donors can call 1-800-933-2566 or visit nybc.org.
