Celebrating Mt. Sinai Girl Scout Gold Award Recipients
On Monday, June 11, Suffolk County Legislator Anker honored Girl Scout Troops 004 and 491 Gold Award recipients at Mt. Sinai High.

Mt. Sinai, N.Y. – On Monday, June 11, 2018, Suffolk County Legislator Anker, honored Girl Scout Troops 004 and 491 Gold Award recipients at Mt. Sinai High, the highest honor within the Girl Scouts of America. During the ceremony the girls presented on their service projects which they completed to help improve the quality of life of all Mount Sinai community members.
“I congratulate the Gold Award honorees on achieving this high honor,” said Legislator Anker. “May they serve as role models and inspire others to also become civically engaged and community leaders.”

Grace Burns of Troop 004 built amphitheater-style seating around the Little Free Library in Heritage Park to promote childhood reading. Julia Hecht of Troop 004 installed two hopscotch courts in the playground area of the park to promote children’s fitness. Nina Barcelon of Troop 491 created a pocket-size booklet with translations of food allergens in six different languages as part of her “Safe Eating for Allergic Travelers project.” Brittany Becker of Trop 491 worked to collect over 85 Christmas tress by donation after the holidays and turned them into wood chips that she donated to a local park. Alexandra Suslan of Troop 491 helped create a sensory garden for people with developmental disabilites at the AHRC Wading River adult residence.
The Girl Scouts of America began more than 100 years ago with the original G.I.R.L., Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low. On March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, she organized the very first Girl Scout troop, and every year since, they have honored her vision and legacy, building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
