County Designates October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. – On October 2nd, the Suffolk County Legislature voted to designate October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Suffolk County. Introduced by Legislator Sarah Anker, the legislation aims to increase awareness on the basic human right to be free from violence and abuse, to ensure that victims know they are not alone, and to foster supportive communities that help survivors seek justice and enjoy full and healthy lives.

The National Resource Center on Domestic Violence defines domestic violence as a pattern of abusive behaviors that adults and adolescents use to control their intimate or dating partners. Behaviors can included physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and other controlling behaviors. Some warning signs include possessiveness, coercion, making threats or false accusations, in-person or online stalking, or exerting control over the partner’s finances.

“So many of those who experience domestic violence suffer in silence,” said Legislator Anker. “By designating October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Suffolk County, we are opening the conversation and working together to end the shame and stigma associated with domestic violence.”
