Memorial Day Weekend Danger

Memorial Day weekend is the long anticipated unofficial start of Summer, in which we honor our fallen heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the name of our country. Our politicians celebrate by taking an extra long and undeserved weekend off and our citizens often celebrate the holiday by taking to the roads, attending barbeques and indulging in spirits. Unfortunately, the combination of the latter can make for very dangerous travel.

Reportedly, the top three notorious holidays for the most car accident fatalities are Independence Day, Labor Day and Memorial Day weekend at number one on the list with more than 300 deaths. High traffic volume, alcohol consumption and driver distraction are among the most prevalent causative factors resulting in this alarming statistic. Accordingly and in order to help prevent from becoming a statistic, one should avoid driving at peak traffic hours, refrain from alcohol consumption and maintain a keen and focused eye while driving.

This year and every year, let us honor the true reason why we celebrate Memorial Day and not use it as an excuse to become inebriated and drive aggressively. Remember that Accidents Happen in the blink of an eye and we all need to respect our motor vehicles for the potentially dangerous instruments they are. Have a very safe holiday weekend and may God bless all of our military men and women, especially those who have sacrificed their lives so that the rest of us may continue to enjoy our freedom.
