Miller Place Girl Scouts Receive Prestigious Gold Award

Three Girl Scouts from Miller Place Troop 2269 were honored at the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Gold Award dinner, held at the Watermill in Smithtown on June 2.

They were among 75 young women in the county recognized for achieving the highest honor that a Girl Scout can achieve.  The dinner was attended by county leaders, dignitaries, Girl Scout council members, family and friends. To be the recipient of the Gold Award, each scout had to complete a project benefiting her community.  The project had to entail at least 80 hours of work, show leadership, organizational and time management skills and be considered sustainable.

Kiersten Simon, currently attending Southern Connecticut State University, completed a project that involved getting Miller Place High School athletes engaged in local volunteer organizations.  Her goal was to open the eyes and hearts of students who might not otherwise volunteer, hoping their experiences would encourage them to continue to give back to their community.  She worked closely with the athletes, coaches and charitable organizations.  She was featured as a Miller Place-Rocky Point Patch whiz kid in August 2012.

Emma Larson, currently attending SUNY Institute of Technology, worked with the Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson.  Her goal was to create homier rooms for the hospice patients during their final journey of life.  She quilted a wall hanging for each of the 16 rooms, keeping with the warm colors of each room. She attached a large analog clock to the center of each wall hanging, so that the patients and their loved ones would have a sense of time.  She was featured as a Miller Place-Rocky Point Patch whiz kid in August 2013.

Heather Honor, currently attending University of New Haven, worked with younger Girl Scouts to teach them kitchen safety while baking and cooking.  After each cooking class, the food was donated to local soup kitchens.  Heather put together a cookbook for each of the scouts in her classes consisting of all the recipes they had made.  She also got the students at her high school involved by having food drives and donating the food collected to local food pantries.  She was featured as a Miller Place-Rocky Point Patch whiz kid in November 2013.
