Miller Place Man Crashes Into Tree Behind Target, Tries to Flee Officers: Police

The 33-year-old was found by police standing in the middle of a frozen sump, police said.

COMMACK, NY - A Miller Place man was charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident after crashing into a tree and fence in Commack on Friday night, according to Suffolk Police.

Officers responded to Crooked Hill Road at the Long Island Expressway North Service Road for a report of a reckless driver in a suspicious vehicle at 10:45 p.m.

The officers noticed the car fled into the parking lot of Target on 4 Henry Street and drive to the back of the store where it hit the tree and a fence, police said.

The driver fled the scene on foot into a wooded area behind the Target, police said.

Canine section officers then found 33-year-old Robert Carr, standing in the middle of a frozen sump within the wooded area.

Following a joint effort, Carr was taken into custody by officers after 35 minutes.

He was charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, police said.

He was taken by Commack Ambulance to Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown for treatment of minor injuries and to be evaluated for exposure, police said.
