Rocky Point Robotics Team Headed to FLL Finals

A team of five students from the Rocky Point School District were named Champions at The Long Island FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Tournament.

A team of five students from the Rocky Point School District were named Champions at The Long Island FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Qualifying Tournament in Mineola on Saturday, January 30th. They competed against 34 other teams from across Long Island. The Rocky Point GearHeadz, led by the team’s Coach, Dr. Chris Pinkenburg of Rocky Point, will now advance to the FLL Long Island Championship, which will be held on February 28th at the Longwood High School. The team, which has been engineering its winning robot for the past ten weeks, also had to present a scientific project that they developed as a solution to an environmental hazard. The GearHeadz created a unique and durable biodegradable shopping bag which is digestible and degrades in water over a period of one month. It is designed to prevent the mass death of sea turtles and other marine life from the accidental ingestion of non-biodegradable plastics. The GearHeadz, which won first place in the FLL Long Island Championship in 2015, is a private club of students from the Rocky Point area.
