Rocky Point School District students in Kateřina Daly’s eighth grade French class have been working on a unit on community and neighborhood. Apart from describing urban areas using vocabulary for city and city living, giving directions in French and some grammar points, the students also compared how Europeans and Americans tend to use, alter and preserve their urban spaces and their cities.

“No such unit can be complete without discussing Paris, of course,” Ms. Daly said.
The students discovered the Arc de Triomphe, Centre Pompidou, Champs-Élysées, Eiffel Tower, Louvre and other famous landmarks.

Students have been using virtual reality goggles, which help because, while a photo presents a static image, with this technology the students can “look around,” discovering what is to the left of the Eiffel Tower, what roads lead to the Arc de Triomphe and what the neighborhood of the Centre Pompidou looks like.

Students shared their thoughts and views on using the virtual reality goggles, reflecting on a different perspective and learning to appreciate the details of the architecture, the size of buildings and being able to look around the city of love.
