On Tuesday June 3rd, the Rocky Point Lions held our annual Charter Night at the Willow Creek Country Club in Mt Sinai, which officially ends our year. The Lions kicked off the meeting with the pledge of allegiance, a rendition of “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, invocation, and the Lions toast. Lion Anita Nigrel then announced the individual winners of our annual scholarship, who were present with their families. The Rocky Point Lions Club Scholarship and Community Improvement Foundation recognized these outstanding four local high school students who each received a $1500 collegiate scholarship. The Foundation has awarded students in these four local districts over $204,000 since 1990. Our awards are based on financial need, academic performance, and service to school and community. These students went through a rigorous interview process and were carefully chosen by the Lions Scholarship Committee. Our winners are:
- Miller Place High School – Matthew Tyler (Roger Williams University)
- Mount Sinai High School – Kelly Napolitano (Hartwick College)
- Rocky Point High School – Christina Romano (St. Joseph's College)
- Shoreham-Wading River High School – Giavanna Verdi (James Madison)
There was a special recognition of Lion Bill Coughlin, who recently passed away, but was a critical catalyst on bringing the scholarship fund to what it is today. Lion Bill will be missed, but his legacy will live on through the scholarship fund.
Our past district governor, Lorri Rieger then addressed the crowd talking about the Lions Club, what it means to be a Lion, and the global impact of Lions Club International. Moreover, she then installed the new officers for 2014-2015 and they are:

Finally, Lions Wendy Stapon and Serina Allan received special recognition awards for outstanding service to the Lions Club. Overall, it was a tremendous night for the Rocky Point Lions and our scholarship award winners and a great way to wrap up 2013-14.
