Firefighters Called To Early Morning Fire At Brookhaven Landfill

A landfill guard spotted a fire in the refuse and it was extinguished quickly by local fire departments, the town said.

BROOKHAVEN, NY — A small fire broke out at the Brookhaven Landfill early on Monday morning, but it was quickly doused by firefighters, town spokesman Jack Krieger said.

The fire broke out at about 12:37 p.m. and "multiple fire departments responded to the scene," police said. A guard noticed the fire "in refuse at the transfer station" and reported it, Krieger said.

There were no injuries or damage to the building or equipment

The fire's cause has not yet been determined, Krieger said.

Brookhaven's Fire Marshal's office is investigating, a police spokeswoman said.
