The students walked into their second grade “headquarters” and picked up their agent badge from each of their desks (white yarn was hanging to simulate lasers.) Students worked together to complete academic mysteries. In reading, they worked together to find text evidence and make inferences to solve a mystery (i.e., who stole the muffins in the reading). Students learned about fingerprints in science and found out the type of fingerprint that they had on their thumb. In math, they solved an arithmetic mystery that had answers that led them to the main office for a special prize, a special “spy” pen. They read with finger flashlights to add to the fun. The students had a personalized badge to “scan” in and out of the classroom and left the room with a certificate that they were each officially a reading detective.

Ms. Warren also posted a video to the SmartBoard that provided a futuristic spy computer background to add to the theme.
