Eleven MPHS Theatre Students Recognized in 18th Annual Teeny Awards Ceremony

MILLER PLACE, NEW YORK (August 2020)—Eleven students from Miller Place High School were recognized this summer for their excellence in high school theatre in East End Arts’ 18th Annual Teeny Awards Ceremony. Among the eleven students honored at the July 23 award ceremony, three students were nominated for their individual performances, with two of those students chosen as category award winners.

“This is the first year that our District has participated in the Teeny Awards Ceremony. Having eleven students recognized, and two award recipients, is a true testament to the hard work and talent demonstrated by the students and staff in our theatre program,” said Dr. Marianne Cartisano, superintendent of Miller Place Union Free School District. “Thank you, East End Arts, for committing to recognizing the exceptional talent among our students, as well as students throughout the Island, despite this year’s abbreviated high school theatre season. Congratulations to all who participated.”

Julianne Donohue, MPHS sophomore, and Joseph Miletti, MPHS junior, were named award recipients for their performances in Mamma Mia. Julianne received the Supporting Actress in a Musical award for her portrayal of Rosie and Joseph received the Outstanding Performer in a Play or Musical for his portrayal of Pepper.

Miller Place’s Andrew Bova was nominated for Lead Male in a Musical. Also recognized were members of the pit orchestra—Shane Beseler, Liliana Bosshard, Kyla Bruno, Tony Chang, Larry Davis, Nick Leone, Sean Muller, and Jack Schiefer—as Technical Recognition Honorees.

Since 2002, East End Arts has organized the Teeny Awards, conceived from the idea of the Tony Awards, to raise the bar on theatre education by encouraging increased attendance and community pride at school productions. Throughout the school year, anonymous volunteer judges, with robust theatre and arts experiences, attend all high school theatrical performances on the East End to determine the best nominees.
