Suffolk Officials Close 1 Rocky Point Beach Over Unsafe Bacteria Levels

ROCKY POINT, NY — A Rocky Point beach was one of three beaches across Suffolk County that were closed Thursday due to findings of bacterial levels exceeding acceptable criteria, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services said.

Terraces on the Sound will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.

The other closed beaches included Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club and Benjamin's Beach in Bay Shore.

Health Services' Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott advises that bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.

As a reminder, the county would like to urge individuals with open wounds, new tattoos, or recent surgeries to avoid contact with saltwater or mixtures of fresh and saltwater (such as coastal bays, inlets, and river mouths).
