Teen Seriously Hurt in Suffolk Crash, Drugged Unlicensed Driver Arrested: Police

Three people were hurt, including an 18-year-old who suffered serious injuries, in a crash late Thursday, police say.

A 33-year-old man was arrested on a drugged driving charge following a crash that seriously injured a teen late Thursday night in Mount Sinai, police said.

According to police, 18-year-old John Barbera was driving a 2005 Hyundai east on Route 25A when he attempted to turn left onto Echo Avenue and was struck by a westbound 2006 Chrysler driven by Erik Westerlund at about 11:15 p.m.

Barbera, of Port Jefferson Station, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Barbera’s passenger, Kuishon Glover, 18, of Sound Beach, was transported to Stony Brook for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Westerlund, of Deer Park, was also treated for minor injuries. He was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and third degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
