MINEOLA, NY — Known for its ice cream flavors and ties to rock and roll, Emack & Bolio's has expanded its reach on Long Island to Mineola.

The Boston-based chain announced on Instagram that it opened its second Long Island location on Saturday, less than a year after opening in Rockville Centre.

Their rock and roll roots date back to 1975 Boston, when Emack & Bolio's opened in a basement and became a hot spot for a late-night, after-gig sweet treat for local musicians and rock stars.

Bob Rook, a music lawyer, started the business as a place that musicians could stop at after their gigs "to mellow out and satisfy their midnight munchies," the website states.

The website added that because of Boston Blue Laws, bars closed at midnight, but Rook and his lawyer friends wanted to keep the party going, creating a hangout-ice-cream space.

According to the website, Rook has worked closely with iconic bands like Aerosmith, U2, and Boston, and the Emack & Bolio's name suggestion came as a request from two homeless gentlemen who received pro bono work from the lawyers to be named after them.

More than 50 years later, the scoop shop is serving customers unique flavors and continuing its rock heritage.

"Beantown Buzz," "Deep Purple Chip," and "Grasshopper Pie" are some of the dairy-based flavor names that the shop has. The ice cream parlor is also home to vegan options made with coconut cream, like "Cappuccino Fudge Swirl," "Chocolate Pudding," and "Mint Chocolate Freckle." Their waffle cones can be dipped in a form of marshmallow topping or chocolate.

Aside from their ice cream options, Emack & Bolio's also has live-culture yogurts like "Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Yogurt" and vanilla, as well as dairy-free sorbet.

The shop is located at 196 2nd Street in Mineola and has officially opened as of August 8.
