📰 News we're reading

1. Improvements to Be Made to LIRR Montauk Branch (lilifepolitics.com) — Year-round LIRR service to Montauk is expanding, with the 5:13 p.m. Penn Station train becoming a permanent daily one-seat ride starting September 2026 and major track upgrades planned to boost reliability. Work in Amagansett and Hampton Bays will shorten single-track stretches, reduce delays, and support more frequent trains, directly improving how Montauk residents and visitors get to and from the East End.

2. Hamptons Real Estate Market Data – Week of 8/18/2026 (hamptons.com) — Home sales from Westhampton to Montauk slowed this past week, with only 26 properties going into contract and dollar volume sharply down from last year. New listings outpaced contracts, pushing inventory higher, and price points ranged from under $1 million to over $20 million, giving Montauk-area buyers and sellers a clearer snapshot of today's softer Hamptons market.

3. A Place to Reach Their 'Fullest Potential' (easthamptonstar.com) — A new day habilitation program at St. Michael's Housing in Amagansett aims to serve adults with developmental disabilities from Southampton through Montauk who lose services after aging out of school. Run by Rise Life Services and People's Arc, it will offer vocational training, social activities, and community engagement, but still needs enough local participants before it can launch.

4. Capybaras, Vaults, Big Ideas at Camp Invention (easthamptonstar.com) — Kids from schools stretching from Montauk to Sag Harbor joined Camp Invention at East Hampton High School for four days of hands-on STEM fun. Young campers built capybara toys, designed "vaults" to protect ideas, experimented with movement and gears, and worked together on creative problem-solving, while organizers emphasized keeping the program affordable and accessible for local families.
