Drunk Driver Cuffed in Montauk: Police

The New Jersey driver was passed out in the driver's seat of his Porsche before starting the car and backing up, police said.

MONTAUK, NY — A New Jersey man was caught driving drunk on West Lake Drive in Montauk Friday, police said.

According to East Hampton Town Police, Chris W. Layton, 50, of Franklin Lakes, NJ, was driving a 1992 Porsche east in a parking lot on West Lake Drive; he was "previously passed out in the driver's seat, before starting his vehicle and beginning to back up."

Upon investigation, Layton had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, bloodshot, glassy eyes, slurred speech, was unsteady on his feet and performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests given, police said.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, first offense, a misdemeanor, police said.
